Crab Appetizer

This is what my Grandma always calls this recipe.  Although we don’t treat it like an appetizer.  I always looked forward to this when we went to my Grandparents house.  She is my only living Grandma left.  I was very lucky to have 3 of my Grandparents still alive until the age of 41 (I’m 44 now).  Not a lot of people can say that.  I will always be grateful for my time with all of them.  If I would have lost them in my selfish teenage years, I would have missed out on many stories, memories and many good times with them.

This is kind of an odd thing for breakfast but, that is how we would always have it and how I have it to this day.  Or as a snack.  You can tell it’s an “old” recipe because there is absolutely nothing healthy about it!  My Grandpa always told me it would put hair on my chest and I remember being little and going to check for “hair” after we ate…ha ha ha!  My Grandpa lived to be 92 and was still climbing onto the roof at that age, against everyone’s warnings.  I love people with spunk like that.  (I also know I have a lot of his spunk!).

Do you have any of your Grandparents left?  What is a favorite memory of yours with a Grandparent?

(Sorry for the picture quality too, my flash is not working right now).

Crab Appetizer

1 stick butter (1/2 cup), room temperature
1 (6 oz.) can flaked crab meat, drained
1 (5 oz.) jar Old English cheese
1/2 t. garlic powder
1/4 t. fresh ground pepper
1/2 t. parsley flakes
2-3 dashes of Tabasco sauce
1 dash of red pepper flakes

English muffins

Mix all ingredietnts (except english muffins) into a bowl.

Toast your english muffins in the toaster.  Spread with crab mixture and put in the microwave for 10- 15 seconds, depending on your microwave.  Enjoy!!Note:  You can freeze crab mixture.

We’ve also put this on cocktail bread and put it under the broiler for a couple minutes…yummy!  I’m sure all you foodie people can think of many ways to use this.  This is soooo comfort food to me.  I want to snuggle up on the couch after I eat this and read, like I used to do at Grandma’s 😀  Just not Dr. Seuss.  Well maybe…;)

Have a great weekend y’all!

  1. It’s a crab melt!! love it on an English Muffin for breakfast and would be equally delicious on crackers as an appetizer. I have never seen Old English cheese spread nor bumblebee crab meat. I feel deprived. They must have these somewhere in NYC!

I’m usually the one that can’t find something locally, and you haven’t seen these two things? That amazes me! Or you probably just never go down the processed crap aisle…lol! 😉 Really though, I could eat that cheese straight from the jar…shhh

      • Ha, I go down the processed crap aisle a lot, LOL! I am all about easy and honestly some of those processed foods (I grew up with them) are really good. I have only ever seen canned tuna or salmon never crab, I must look for it.

Okay, I feel better knowing there are others like me 🙂 I like the canned crab because it’s the real stuff, that artificial stuff I just can’t handle. I think it’s a texture thing, it’s too rubbery to me.

Looks super tasty! And my grandpa also had the “it puts hair on your chest” line–it must be a grandpa thing. =) I have 2 living right now (89 and 90!), and I actually have a post about them that I’m working on for Monday. Big Jake (my grandpa) is rocking some cool shades and a white suit–totally stylin’!

That’s funny your Grandpa using that saying too 🙂 I remember reading quite a few stories about your Grandparents. Especially Big Jake and Grandma Kitty, looking forward to the blog! (I loved her Christmas cards a lot!).

  3. Hot.Crab.Dip = there’s nothing I don’t absolutely LOVE about all 3 of those words. It’s almost midnight and I’m outwardly groaning and my stomach is growling bc this looks AMAZING!

I remember this from myspace! I think I even saved it. I remember looking for “Old English” in the store and being totally shocked to find it–it’s one of those things that was never on my radar. But for some reason I never made this. I totes have to-it sounds really good.

Both my maternal grandparents are still alive. My Dad’s parents had him late in life–he was the surprise baby that came along after most of his siblings were grown and ready to have children of their own, so my paternal grandpa was dead long before I was born but thankfully my Grandma Davis lived to a ripe old age of 94 and even made it to our wedding before passing away in 2004, so I feel lucky to have had her as long as I did.

I have lots of fond memories of my grandparents…probably my favorite is the time when Grandma Millner (still living, but with Alzheimers :() was butchering chickens. She did this almost every time we visited in the summer, but this particular time was more memorable. The way she did it was terrible. Gramps would hold them upside down and she’d saw off their heads with a dull knife and it seemed to take forever b/c they’d be flapping and squawking like crazy. Anyway, Lacey was like 4 years old and after one of the chickens was dropped, it seemed to run straight at her. She took off screaming and the headless chicken really seemed to be chasing her b/c every time she turned, the chicken turned too. It finally dropped dead and we were all laughing our butts off, despite the gore & Lacey’s hysterics. Fun times on the farm, man. lol

Can I get an award for “longest blog comment ever?” LOL!

You say I have a good memory, look at you remembering this from MS. I don’t even remember that! I love the story about Lacey and the chicken, too funny! I used to tell stories about my farm if you remember. Farms do have a lot of funny stories, stuff just always seems to be happening. We were talking not long ago about your Grandma Millner, I’m glad you still have her even with her not-so-good days. Oh, you DO get the award for longest blog comment…lol! 😉

Ha – V should get an award for longest comment ever! Love her.

OMG, I need to make this – stat. This may be Tony’s football snack on Sunday! I was grandparentless by the age of 19 – so sad – I would have loved to know then when I was more grown up and could have asked more questions!

  7. um holy yum that looks amazing 🙂 I lost all of my grandparents by the time I was 19 and both parents by 26. I am definitely envious of the time you have been able to spend with your family! I hope you have a great weekend!

  8. This looks so good! Very similar to my “hot crab dip” recipe 🙂 YUM!
