Slow cooker Ham & White Beans

This week, at least a couple of nights, it was cooler out.  I seen this recipe on Pinterest and have been craving it ever since.  So, watching the weather I put it in the crock pot when I knew we would have a cool evening.  I love coming home after work to the smell of food.

This is super simple but, definitely comfort food at it’s best.  I served it with jalapeno cornbread and was in my glory.  Even though the hubs had to find a lil sumpin, sumpin to eat himself 😉

Slow cooker Ham and White Beans

1 lb. package dried northern beans
About 1 lb. of diced ham (I used 14 oz. and I also preferred to use Canadian bacon)
2 t. onion powder
7 c. of chicken broth
salt and pepper, to taste
1 T. of butter (optional)

Rinse the beans in a colander.  Add to the crock pot: beans, ham, onion powder, salt, pepper and butter.  Add the chicken broth.  Cover and cook on low about 8 hours. *I browned my ham/Canadian bacon in a pan first, this step is optional.

Recipe adapted from Plainchicken.com.  Yield: 6 servings.

Off the subject of food but, it was a short recipe so here’s a couple pictures of our garden.

Remember I’m in Michigan so I’m way behind some of you folks.  My tomatoes are quarter size, my hot peppers are still green and my corn has a way to go.  I have onions galore, green onions, chives, sweet basil, cilantro, dill, radishes and parsley though that I have been using.  Some bunnies had their fill of lettuce as we have no more.  Oddly, they don’t touch the carrots…maybe because they’re underground?  Who knows 😉

My blackberry bushes, we have loads of these.

Come August you can fill buckets full.  I usually let my friends pick berries after I pick what I want, which hardly makes a dent in the big picture.  You wanna’ be my neighbor don’t cha? 😉

And last, but not least by far, my Crissy and my grand son at 28 weeks…getting closer! 😀  Though, I wish she wouldn’t have cut her pretty head off though…lol! 😉

Have a great weekend y’all and do any of you have a garden?

    Aw, Crissy looks great!!
And I may be totally spacing on this–but where does the ham come in? It looks like you browned it in a skillet or something–do you add it at the very end?

  2. Suzie says:

You two are not too far apart at all, I love that I get to follow both of your journeys 🙂 Oops, my fault, thanks for catching the ham part, I have it corrected now!

  3. I am definitely making that ham and bean soup, and my husband will be making his own dinner too 🙂 I will cut it in half though. I am so jealous of your garden!

I saw that picture on Facebook of your DIL – so cool! When its cooler out, I will definitely make that – although it will be with sandwiches. My husband never thinks soup and bread constitute a full dinner! 😀

  5. Your garden is coming along so beautifully my friend, those blackberries look superb 🙂
Crissy is so close, I can see why you are so excited 😀
Your dinner looks fantastic my friend, I can see why it caught your eye!

    Cheers

  6. The soup looks fantastic I wish it were cool enough to eat it, we are sweltering here in NYC! I have blackberry bush envy, lucky you I do wish I were your neighbor!! Congrats to you and lovely Crissy it is getting close. How exciting.

We only had two real cool nights, now the temps. are heading back up…which I love…sorry! My neighbors can actually mow there lawn and pick off blackberries…too funny! 🙂 Thank you, I’m so excited for my first grand son, I can’t wait!

Seriously, John won’t even eat something as basic and manly as ham and beans? I will kill him! lol 😉 This does sound good but we haven’t been having any cooler days. We were at the lake a couple days ago and a guy we met there and was talking to said his kids wanted to come b/c the pool at home was too hot. It reminded me of you and your sauna pool! In the past, people bought heated pools…I think the next big thing will be chilled pools! ha!

I love your garden so much and I would love to be your neighbor for so many reasons but yes, the blackberries would be an extra perk. 🙂 Love that baby belly on Crissy!

I will kill him….you crack me up girl! 😉 My pool is cooler now because it hasn’t been so hot, it’s supposed to heat up again though. I just add water from the hose to make it cooler….lol! Thankfully, I’ve gotten a lot of use out of it this year. I only use it when it’s pretty warm…you know how I am 😉

I let a friend pick berries last year after I did. She ended up with 9 buckets, about 5 lb. containers each!! That’s a lot of berries. And yes, I’d love to be neighbors for many reasons too 🙂
